Ääniä: Finland's Official Soundscape

Ääniä: Finland's Official Soundscape

Entered by Finland Promotion Board

Finland is widely appreciated for stability, innovation and sustainability – but research has shown that its global image can also appear cold, distant and overly technical. Cultural impressions have consistently been the weakest link in Finland’s nation brand, despite culture being a proven driver of attraction for talent, investment and visitors. Strengthening Finland’s identity through a more design-led, creative approach was therefore essential. This challenge presented an opportunity: to create an identity element that could bridge rational strengths with emotional resonance, and to do so in a novel way that would create media attention.

The result was Ääniä: Finland’s Official Soundscape – the world’s first composed national soundscape, commissioned by the Finland Promotion Board. Ääniä translates some of Finland’s core brand themes – nature, tranquillity, authenticity, high quality and everyday happiness – into music. It provides a sensory entry point to Finland that transcends language and visuals, inviting global audiences to experience the “feel” of Finland anywhere in the world.
