Vormsi - the landmark of being yourself
Entered by Vormsi Municipality
Vormsi is the fourth-largest island of Estonia, measuring 93 square kilometres (36 square miles), and located in the Baltic Sea, northwest of the mainland. The island has a distinctive history and culture, having been inhabited by Estonian Swedes ("rannarootslased", meaning "coastal Swedes") for centuries.
The island's population reached 3,000 before World War II, but currently numbers only around 455. Like many other small municipalities, Vormsi strives hard to attract new inhabitants and off-season visitors.
