Scotland: Innovation with spirit

Scotland: Innovation with spirit

Entered by Brand Scotland

In a world of nation branding, innovation is one of the most desirable but difficult positions to own. Almost every country claims to be innovative, meaning credibility comes not from saying it, but from proving it through the people, ideas, discoveries, and businesses others can see for themselves. Independent benchmarking through the Anholt Nation Brands Index showed Scotland's reputation for science, technology, and innovation trailed competitors, highlighting an opportunity to strengthen perceptions by demonstrating what Scotland already does well.

The opportunity lay in Scotland's own place DNA: pairing innovation with something no competitor could easily replicate, Scotland’s distinctive spirit. Qualitative research confirmed that audiences respond most strongly to innovation when it is paired with something distinctively Scottish: their history, creativity, and character. This addressed one of the most crowded and contested challenges in nation branding: how to make innovation distinctive.
