City Nation Place has teamed up with leading sustainable tourism charity, the Travel Foundation, to offer up to five DMOs expert pro bono support as they develop their COVID-19 recovery plans. The Travel Foundation will review and strengthen these plans with a focus on increasing opportunities for community livelihoods, strong and resilient local supply chains, resource protection, and overall destination management capacities, drawing on nearly two decades’ experience globally.

Over the coming months, the selected DMOs will receive expert advice from the Travel Foundation (with an estimated value of up to €10,000), based on a strategic review of draft or completed recovery plans. City Nation Place will follow your progress, sharing lessons learned along the way and culminating in presentations at City Nation Place Global in London in November, to share experiences.

Scope of advice

The Travel Foundation has expertise in understanding and managing the impacts of the visitor economy and building strong local supply chains and livelihoods opportunities. They will use this to evaluate recovery plans to enhance positive impacts on the local economy while protecting shared resources. They will provide a high-level strategic commentary of the recovery plan’s objectives and corresponding activities. This may include:

  • Knowledge, measurement and data management
  • SME capacity and skills development
  • Visitor management policies
  • Resource management, including impacts on public and municipal assets.
  • Governance structure, community and private sector engagement.
  • Finance mechanisms and cost recovery.
  • Smarter investment and development opportunities
  • Product, service and market diversification opportunities

Application criteria

This initiative is open to any DMO or similar organisation involved in place-making and economic development at a nation, city, state or municipality level. You must be able to commit approximately 10-15 hours’ staff time (including senior-level input) to this initiative. You will also support the wider sharing of high-level, non-confidential lessons from this initiative, so that others may learn from the process.

The Travel Foundation will seek as much diversity as possible when selecting candidates.
