This tour will explore one of the newest real estate development projects in NYC, Industry City. Industry City is the redevelopment of several turn of the 20th century warehouses originally built as a port facility along the Brooklyn waterfront. Once shipping containerized, it moved to New Jersey and large portions of the NY waterfront fell into disuse. Over the last 20 years, the city has been working to redevelop various waterfront sites and Industry City, which is a private development, is seeking to repeat other successful developments such as DUMBO, The Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Chelsea Market. The developers, led by Belvedere Capital and Jamestown, have invested millions into renovating the massive buildings into a mixed-use site with manufacturing space, office space, retail, entertainment, and more. The development has attracted tech companies, small-scale manufacturing, creative businesses, locals and visitors looking for retail and entertainment, and has created thousands of jobs. Our tour will give you an insider’s look into NYC’s contemporary manufacturing, tech, and design industries. We’ll discuss the redevelopment of the complex along with the opportunities and challenges that it’s redevelopment presents. You will also learn how Industry City has been a revolutionary part of making goods in NYC, both past and present, all while meeting some of the passionate designers and artisans who operate there today — and sampling some great food and drink, too!
The Industry City Tour is now fully booked. We have arranged an alternative tour, please see details below:
Governors Island has been transformed from an abandoned former military base into a model of sustainable design and resiliency. All of the Island’s new landscapes demonstrate that cities can adapt to a changing climate and rising sea levels while ensuring the public’s quality of life. During this tour, visitors to the Island will learn how the rich history of the island has shaped its future uses, experience the new park landscapes and the Hills that have been thoughtfully designed to anticipate climate change, appreciate the importance of our back-of-house compost center and urban farm, and understand the future development goals for the island.
The ferry will depart from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street, Slip 7, New York, NY 10004 at 09.00. All guests must check in with security before boarding the ferry. The ferry takes about 10 minutes to get to the island, and guests will be met once they disembark. The tour will run for 1.5 hours giving you plenty of time to arrive back to the ferry terminal and make your way to the conference that starts at 1pm. You are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.
