City Nation Place Asia Pacific Survey

City Nation Place Asia Pacific Survey

A recent Place Brand Observer article, which provided a snapshot of place branding practice in Asia, started with the premise that the concept of place branding was new to many places in Asia, with many nations and cities still focused on “old style” marketing and advertising. We’d recommend the article for providing links to many interviews and articles which assess the state of place branding in different nations across Asia – but we’re also keen to find out more from the City Nation Place community. We are inviting all our Asia based followers to complete a quick survey to help us build a picture of the challenges and priorities for those working on nation, region or city branding strategy, or more specifically to drive tourism, attract talent or boost inward investment. We will be happy to share the results at and will use the insights to help shape the agenda for the first City Nation Place Asia Pacific conference, which is scheduled to take place in Singapore on 28 February & 1 March, 2018.

Our own recent trip to Singapore, to prepare the ground for the launch of this new conference, suggested that there is a growing understanding of some of the key concepts of a more holistic approach to place branding strategy. The recent launch of a new brand identity and campaign by Singapore is notable for the fact that, for the first time, this new communication approach has been developed through cooperation between the Singapore Tourism Board and the Economic Development Board of Singapore. There is also a strong emphasis on citizen engagement, with the creative work featuring nearly 100 Singaporeans telling their own stories, and in this Channel News Asia interview, with Lionel Yeo, STB Chief Executive, and Beh Swan Gin, Chair of the EDB, it’s clear that the creative work is rooted in a longer-term strategic vision for the economic development of Singapore.

Whilst we will be hosting City Nation Place Asia Pacific in Singapore, the event is designed to provide ideas, inspiration and information for place branding practitioners across the region. Wherever you are based, from India to New Zealand, from Indonesia to Japan - and all places in between – we invite you to share your experiences through the Survey and to book the date for the conference in your diaries.
